How to Choose the Right Linens For Your Bedroom

Choosing the linens for your bedroom is an intensely personal choice. The bedroom is one of the most private locations in your home, and a place where you want to feel comfortable, restful and at home. Choosing your bed linens needs to be about style, comfort and your own unique personal sense of taste.

Choosing Colors

When it comes to choosing colors for your bed linens, you know have just about every choice imaginable. There are some considerations to take into account when making your selections however.

First, you want to consider the color scheme already present in the room. Some colors look great together, while others might clash considerably. That’s not to say that you need to match however. Sometimes, a contrast, such as very bright colors on the bed in a room that is painted mostly in neutral tones, can really make the bed pop out. However, if you prefer to maintain some sort of a constant theme, then you may want to instead select colors for your bed that are in the same family as those on your furniture or walls.

It is also important to think about the kind of mood that you want to impart in your bedroom. For those who like a bold or sexy feel, bright colors like red can really set the tone you’re looking for. If you’re looking for something that is relaxing or calming, pale tones of blue, purple, grey or green could be appropriate. If you’re going for an ultra modern look, then choosing stark whites and blacks can be an excellent option.

Choosing Patterns

Another factor to consider is the pattern that you want on your linens. These range from the very bold to solid colors. A basic rule to keep in mind here is that the more patterned your linens are, the more attention it will draw to the bed. So, if the bed is supposed to be the focal point in the design of the room then using strong patterns can work well. If you want the focus to be on another feature such as bookshelf, fireplace or piece of art however, then sticking to plainer patterns is a better idea.

Material

Choosing the material that you want for your bedding should be largely about comfort. You don’t want a heavy material if you live in a warm climate year round, as you will quickly find yourself uncomfortable. Many people keep one set of bedding for winter and a lighter set for summer.

Thread count is important as well, as is the type of cotton used in sheets. The higher the thread count, the finer the sheet will be, although these numbers are sometimes deceptive. At the very minimum, look for a thread count of 200 if you want a nice, high quality sheet. You should also look for sheets that are made from Egyptian cotton if you want the highest quality feeling sheets possible.
